Weekly Horoscope, Sunday 9- Saturday 15

All Signs

This week we have Valentine’s Day, but have you ever wondered how it got started? According to Encyclopedia Britannica: “The holiday has origins in the Roman festival of Lupercalia, held in mid-February. The festival, which celebrated the coming of spring, included fertility rites and the pairing off of women with men by lottery. At the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I replaced Lupercalia with St. Valentine’s Day.” Wow! Fertility rites! And they chose couples by lottery! (I think this is also the origin of the phrase, “Your number is up!”)

Aries (March 21-April 19)

This is a popular week! Enjoy schmoozing and interacting with clubs and organizations. Your ruler Mars is at the top of your chart, which arouses your ambition. This influence will last for six weeks and it occurs only once every two years so use it! Mercury retrograde will help you because it is in a part of your chart that influences doing research and ferreting out answers and solutions to old problems. Meanwhile, your ability to schmooze is enhanced, which is why you are so charming. (This is because Venus is in your sign.) This is a great week to buy wardrobe treasures, which is a good idea since you are pumped to pursue your ambitions! (You never get a second chance to make a first impression.)

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Right now, the Sun is at the top of your chart casting you in a flattering spotlight, which means people are impressed with you even if you don’t do anything special. Obviously, you can use this to your advantage. You also want to travel and grab every chance to expand your world through study, film and talking to people from different cultures. Many of you are pursuing opportunities in publishing, the media, the law and medicine. Old friends are back in your world now. Perhaps this is why some of you are having secret love affairs? Fear not, my lips are sealed. (Swami knows all, sees all, tells nothing.)

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

This week you want to do something to expand your world because you feel the need for adventure and a chance to learn something new. Obviously, travel would be an excellent choice. And if you can’t travel, you can always explore your own backyard. Meanwhile, disputes with the government and other sources about taxes, debt, shared property and insurance issues might be a drag. Just deal with it. Old bosses and parents you have not seen for a while might be back in your life at this time. Fortunately, the placement of Venus indicates that your ability to schmooze will be excellent. You will be charming and diplomatic with everyone you meet! In fact, a friend could become a lover. (Oh my.)

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

For some reason, you feel intense and passionate about issues at this time. You will notice this because you are a sensitive “feeling” person. In part, these passionate feelings could be due to serious discussions about inheritances and shared property. But also, fiery Mars is opposite your sign for the next six weeks and this can make you feel easily annoyed with others. Fortunately, your saved by the fact that Venus is at the top of your chart. Whatever is at the top of your chart is very visible to others, so this means your charm and your interest in the arts and your ability to be creative is noticeable to all. Nice.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

Remember to get more sleep this week because you need it. At this time, you have a unique opportunity to more objectively observe your closest relationships, which means you can improve how you relate to others. This is invaluable. When we get along well with those who are closest to us – this promotes our happiness. Mercury Retrograde will help you wrap up loose ends regarding shared property, inheritances, wills, estates, taxes and debt. Use this to your advantage. Fortunately, Mars will give you the energy to work hard this week. (In fact, it could make you bossy and busy delegating to others.) Venus will heighten your appreciation of beauty and encourage opportunities to travel for pleasure. We like!

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You are still in work mode, which means not only are you busy, you are also doing everything possible to get better organized in every aspect of your life. Although we recently had the Chinese New Year, you have one more chance at a new “fresh start” because the Tibetan New Year is on Monday, Feb. 24. (I’m using that as my deadline.) Use this to clean up your act so that you start your new year feeling better organized, polished and shiny! Ex-partners and old friends are back in your world. Hopefully, this is interesting and not a problem. This is a good week to ask for a loan or mortgage because people will be generous to you. You might even receive a gift. Yeah!

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

It’s play city for you this week! Accept all invitations to party. Enjoy schmoozing with others. Sports events and fun activities with kids will appeal. It’s also a romantic week so plan on fun with your main squeeze. Singles should not hesitate to flirt. Chaos and increased activity on the home front will require your attention. Fortunately, with Venus opposite your sign, you will be diplomatic with everyone. Admittedly, in addition to dealing with whatever is happening at home, your job is also frustrated by silly, goofy mistakes. Patience is the key to keeping your sanity and a smile on your face.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Home, family and your involvement with a parent continue to be your primary focus this week. Likewise, some of you might spend more time on the home front cocooning. Perhaps you are thinking about old flames who are back on the scene. Sometimes when an old lover pops up, it’s thrilling and exciting. But other times, it’s disconcerting. Be tactful. Right now, Mars is in your House of Communications, which make you energetic, proactive and persuasive! It will encourage you to read and write more but it can also make you a bit scary if you come on too strong. Fortunately, at work, this is not a problem because Venus will sweeten your words with everyone. And so it goes.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Your busy pace continues because you’ve got places to go, things to do people to see! You are an excellent communicator right now, which means this week is a great time to write, sell, market, teach and act. Old issues regarding home and family might finally be wrapped up due to the influence of Mercury retrograde. (Mercury will either stall things or bring them to a closure.) Mars will guarantee that you are working hard to earn money but it also increases your cash flow, which means you are spending as well. That’s okay. (Money is only useful if you spend it.) Venus will attract opportunities for romance, socializing, enjoying the arts and participating in sports events and fun times with kids. It’s a great week.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

“Show me the money!” Yes, this week you continue to be focused on cash flow, earnings and assets. Not only are you thinking about boosting your earnings, many of you are also making an effort to take care of what you own. You enjoy doing this because you hate waste and you value continuity and respect for the past. “These were my dad’s tools.” With Mars in your sign for the next six weeks, you will be pumped with energy! (You will notice this because this occurs only once every two years.) Get physical exercise to blow off any pent-up steam that might occur. This is also great week to entertain at home and tweak your digs by redecorating or buying something new for where you live.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Ta da! The Sun is still in your sign this week, which empowers you. It attracts people to you as well as favourable situations. It also re-energizes you. Meanwhile, fair Venus is in your House of Communications and this makes you particularly diplomatic and charming when talking to others. This is why you will begin to notice how much love there is in your daily world. People care about you and vice a versa. You will also observe your daily surroundings with greater appreciation. This is a wonderful influence for you! Unfortunately, cheques in the mail will be late and delays regarding money and cash flow are likely. Be aware of anyone who might be working against your best interests.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

This week has conflicting influences. One part of you wants to hide and retire from the busy insanity of the world around you. (This is why you will seek out moments of solitude and pleasant surroundings and keep a low profile.) Countering this is an energetic influence from Mars that makes you want to engage with friends and groups in a dynamic way! You might take charge of a group or you might find yourself in competition with someone? Obviously, because Mercury is retrograde in your sign at this time, silly, goofy mistakes will plague your footsteps. Transportation delays, misplaced items, confused communications and old friends from the past are part of the picture. Patience.

Mercury pentacle 4th for blog

The 4th Pentacle of mercury- Seal of Solomon

Continuing from the previous post of aligning with Universal Powers for effective magickal practices…….

In this post I will be discussing the 7th of the Sacred Seven (in no particular order) that I have been mentioning in the previous posts.

Here I will be talking about the final planet of the sacred seven and not in that order, the planet Mercury. Ruling over Gemini and Virgo it is the planet that influences the intellect and of communication and therefore the element of air.

Mercury the planet is androgynous and neutral, it is neither masculine nor feminine, neither positive nor negative, taking on the qualities of whatever aspects it comes into contact with.

The Planet

Distance from Sun: 57.91 million km
Orbital period: 88 days
Length of day: 58d 15h 30m
Mass: 3.285 × 10^23 kg (0.055 M⊕)
Surface area: 74.8 million km²

The God

In the Ancient Roman World Mercury was the equivalent of the Greek God Hermes. The swift-footed messenger God traversed between the upper and lower worlds and his origins can be traced back as far as 13th– 15th Century BCE.

The many associations of Mercury include that of fertility, communication that include writing, messengers, trade, luck, and thievery. He was the patron saint of merchants, business people that were involved in all types of trade. The staff of Hermes, the Kerykeion is recognized as a symbol of trade and commerce and not that of medicine.

As the God of Medicine Aesculapius and His Rod is attributed to the arts of health and healing.

In the ancient Egyptian world he was connected to Thoth that is also connected with communication and responsible for writing the Emerald Tablet.

Astrology

Due to Mercury’s speedy elliptical orbit, Mercury often appears to be going backwards, with frequent retrograde motions of about 3-4 every year. The good news is that these retrogrades are short lived, the bad news is that when they are in that motion they can at times wreak havoc in your life. Caution in signing contracts, breakdown in communication, avoid surgery, avoid travel, heightened anger, frustration, anxiety and of course the list of all your insecurities goes on. Now the majority of the time such retrogrades go unnoticed, that is until something happens in your life, then there is always Mercury retrograde if it does.

Spell Against Mercury Retrograde

If you are familiar with spell work you can try this to draw the positive aspects of Mercury during its retrograde. It encourages harmony, balance, protection and healing is such tumultuous times.

Spell work-

  1. Purple candle
  2. Anointed with frankincense
  3. Surround with your choice of crystals and herbs from the magickal correspondences above
  4. Light the candle and say:

‘My mind is a fortress, backwards Mercury, shall cause no deceit, nor damage. The light and stones shall save me’.

  1. When the candle has burned all the way down, and extinguished itself, take the stones, place them in a mojo bag, and carry with you as long as Mercury stays in retrograde.

Orphic Hymn

Below is a beautiful hymn or prayer to the great God Mercury- Hermes. Use this if you want to invoke the energy of Mercury- Hermes, use the planetary magickal correspondences for extra guidance and remember as with any spell work to understand, observe and respect the energies that you are working and drawing from and with.

Invocation/ Prayer to Mercury- Hermes

The Fumigation from Frankincense.
“Hermes, draw near, and to my pray’r incline, angel of Jove [Zeus], and Maia’s son divine;
Studious of contests, ruler of mankind, with heart almighty, and a prudent mind.
Celestial messenger, of various skill, whose pow’rful arts could watchful Argus kill:
With winged feet, ’tis thine thro’ air to course, O friend of man, and prophet of discourse:
Great life-supporter, to rejoice is thine, in arts gymnastic, and in fraud divine:
With pow’r endu’d all language to explain, of care the loos’ner, and the source of gain.
Whose hand contains of blameless peace the rod, Corucian, blessed, profitable God;
Of various speech, whose aid in works we find, and in necessities to mortals kind:
Dire weapon of the tongue, which men revere, be present, Hermes, and thy suppliant hear;
Assist my works, conclude my life with peace, give graceful speech, and me memory’s increase.”

The Moon

Continuing from the previous post of aligning with Universal Powers for effective magickal practices…….

In this post I will be discussing the second of the Sacred Seven that I have been mentioning in the previous posts, the Moon.

As a practitioner of the Craft, the Moon is by far the most influential in my life.

Where does one start describing the essence of their own Psyche that is such a significant part of this incredible celestial energy?

Just like everything that exists on this earth and in the cosmos, the Moon shows its energy, its influence and its power through its phases, influencing the ever-evolving soul or what the ancient Greeks called the Psyche. Each Moon phase has an influence according to the Energy, Frequency and Vibration omitted by the rest of the celestial sphere. NOTHING stands alone, EVERYTHING is connected.

Moon magick is an experience that teaches you that nothing is separate and that everything is connected. It allows you to see deep into not only your own soul but that of the Great Mother and the Cosmos.

Moon magick to me is ‘Moon Medicine’. One that heals the body, spirit and soul, remembering that all three are one. By practicing Moon Medicine one learns the rhythm of the self that is connected to that of the earth and beyond.  A true Witch is connected to the moon through this Moon Medicine and understands its connection to the healing aspect of the self and all those around him/her.

The true strength in understanding the Moon is by learning what it affects. The herbs, flowers, plants that are at their most potent in the evening and at what phases of the moon they are their most active. Which animals are at their most active and what is it that they do and why they do it.

The Moon’s gravitational pull has an enormous influence on all our water ways and the earth’s core. The waterways such as the lakes, rivers and oceans have an important influence and impact on the earth’s weather system. Study the way human beings act at certain times of the month. The best way to do this is to start with yourself.

Moon Diary

Begin by creating a moon diary, one that shows you the different phases of the moon and the seasons. In the diary you can add your magickal herb correspondence for that particular month, your spell work, your meditations done, your rituals and of course your feelings and emotions. You could also add the celestial influences of that month such as planets, asteroids eclipses, retrogrades and so forth. You can add your personal observations of people around you, animal and plant life. Add any further readings that you have done that have influenced your magickal work. I know from personal observation that at certain times of the month I’m drawn to do certain things, go certain places and read or research certain books and subjects.

You could say that it is a little like a Grimoire, well it is, and it is that of the moon and its magick……

As everything is connected, the Moon Journal or Diary is there to help you connect to the energy of the Moon and that of everything that is influenced by it.

Psyche

One of the most important human aspects in the essence that is influenced by the Moon is that of the Psyche.

In fact Psyche was a Goddess in ancient Greece that was the personification of the soul, one that was attributed to the Feminine Spiritual and Psychological growth, and no it’s not only for the female, it’s the Feminine, one that is imprinted in both men and women. This is where the origins of the word Psychology comes from.

Planetary Correspondences of the Moon

The list really is long…….

However I will only mention just a couple of bits of information that you might be interested in doing further research.

Colors

Blue, white, orange, red, yellow

Herbs oils and incense

Sandalwood, rose, cedar, frankincense, hyssop, orange, rosewood, yarrow, night jasmine, sage, tea tree, all night shades, evening primrose and WOW the list goes on……

Crystals

Moon stones, selenite (named after the Goddess Selene which is the personification of the moon), amber, opal, rose quarts, quartz, obsidian

Moon magick bath salts to help you relax just before or after a ritual

I cup sea salt

8 Drops frankincense

8 Drops sandalwood

Mix together. Place in an airtight container. Place 1-3 tablespoons in your bath.

Planetary knowledge that can assist you in developing your Magickal Practice.

Know They Self

While embarking on my path to understand the self, I stumbled on the magickal world of the Alchemist. ‘Know thy Self’ the very words inscribed on the entrance of many great temples from Kemet and Luxor in Egypt to Delphi in Greece.

This was an axiom practiced by the great minds of the ancient world that brings the knowing of one’s self in accordance with the understanding of the creation of  ‘All That Is.’

Through the process of alchemy -transformation and transmutation, one takes a glimpse into the world of the Divine by looking into their own being. The Wise person, Witch, Seeker call yourself what you may, understands that the search of the Holy Grail, the Philosophers Stone, the meaning of life and the reason for all existence only lies within. The Witch that realizes their true power and potential understands this well, giving them the power to create a beautiful existence for them selves and all they are in contact with.

Alchemy- Word Origin.

The word originated in ancient Egypt from the word Khem meaning the black land. It was here the sacred art of alchemy was practiced through methods of mummification for the goal of immortality. It was then later taken by the ancient Greeks that introduced the word Khemica meaning chemical. It trickled down to the Arabs where they then called it AlKhemica- Al- meaning the all mighty or sacred and Khemica meaning the chemistry. Putting that all together it translates as the sacred chemistry of the Divine. Egyptians were big on magic and it was all through their practice of alchemy that connected them to the celestial energies of the ‘Sacred Seven’.

Who are the Sacred Seven?

The ancients spoke of the Seven Sacred Planets that were Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury and the Moon. You may also know them as Cronus, Pluto, Aries, Helios or Apollo, Hermes and Selene or Artemis.

They are in Druid, Norse, Indian Ayurvedic, Australian and American Native Aboriginal Law, in the Far East of Asia to Europe, Scandinavia, and beyond! All the ancients were observers of the same sky, just from a different perspective.

The Witch as the Alchemist

Much like the Witch, the Alchemist is the seeker of truth obtained through a perpetual path of encountering the Divine and a mystical path of knowledge.

Alchemy is not just restricted to that of the Alchemist. It is the formulation and the foundation of creation itself. Its essence belongs in all spiritual, philosophical and religious paths. It connects ourselves to that of the spirit and the soul of the earth and that of the whole of the celestial spheres. In fact it is the very root of our modern science, medical and spiritual Reductionism.

Now astrology may not be for everyone, however it is very important, that in order to understand the natural order, and be in tune with the Great Mother and The Great Father, we at least need to learn the foundations of the rhythm of the earth. It is respectable that we learn to understand the essence of the ephemeris of the planetary cycles such as the moon phases, especially when we are drawing down the moon, creating affirmations, spells, wishes, call it what you may. What does each moon phase mean, the new moon, the waning, waxing, gibbous and crescent moon, the full moon? Each phase of the moon has its own energy that is created by the other planetary alignments in the celestial spheres.

How about the energy of the other planets such as Mercury that is connected to the ancient God Hermes. The planet Venus, this is connected to the Greek Goddess Aphrodite and so on. The ancients knew this connection all too well and honored these planets as their Gods. They called them the ‘Sacred Seven’ and built grand temples in their honor. Their temples were built according to astrological alignments such as Stonehenge, the Acropolis, the pyramids from Machu Picchu to Egypt.

In the study of Witchcraft, Alchemy, Wicca etc., in fact any other earth based religion as well as philosophy and spirituality, such knowledge is not only invaluable but imperative for the connection to the natural environment that one will be closely working with. In our modern world of sciences we have completely removed ourselves from this energy. Have we forgotten that the seasons are connected to this energy created in the celestial spheres? The earth’s rhythm is expressed through the seasons, this is why we honor each and every turning of the Wheel. We see this respectful honoring through the animal, plant and mineral kingdom, it is all around us, it is right there in front of us.

It’s important and respectable that a Witch or any one studying a nature based religion understands where the very energy that they are drawing for their magickal use comes from.

So how is a Witch connected to Alchemy, Astrology and the Elements?

Every time you make a potion, an elixir, cast a spell, make a wish on a full moon, perform a ritual for Esbat, Sabbat of ANY form that includes the Great Mother Earth, the Great Luna Mother and Solar father or Solar King, you are performing Alchemy. In fact when there is a solar and Luna eclipse they call this the Alchemical Wedding.  The time where 2 great celestial energies merge in the quintessence of the Cosmos (celestial bodies).

The very elements that a Witch honors are the quintessence of these celestial bodies. Most advanced civilizations understood that our origins were from the stars, the Star Nations, the Star Seeds, The Pleiades etc… It was believed that of these classical 5 elements we (including all that is on earth and Earth Herself) were created from.

“To the elements it came from

Everything will return.

Our body to Earth

Our Blood to Water

Heart to Fire

Breath to Air.”

-Empedoclese- (495 BCE)

The fifth element is the quintessence or spirit that brings everything on this Great Mother Earth into existence as a result of the celestial energy.

Please Remember…..

whenever you use a herb for magickal purposes, a crystal, make a talisman, burn a candle for a desire, burn a piece of paper with written words to acquire an effective outcome, collect rain water or morning dew of a plant for spell or any magickal work, this is practicing Alchemy!

When we take something with intention and desire it to be turned into something else we are are performing alchemy. It is the transformation and transmutation that is achieved through the energy of the soul, connected to that of the body and spirit that originates from the celestial sphere, the cosmos, the Universe, the Goddess, God, Great Spirit etc……

The more that you are in tune with these energies and understand what they are ‘gifting’ you, the more effective your magick will become. This method puts you in alignment with the very essence of your path.

In Hermetics the saying ‘As Above so Below, as Within so Without’ explains that what is in the celestial spheres above is in the very essence of ourselves, hence the God and Goddess living within our being. It is through alchemy that we connect and are the embodiment of the God and the Goddess and representation here on earth.

What next……..

In the following weeks I will attempt to include a small list of ephemeris that will include the ‘Sacred Seven’ and hopefully this will give you an understanding and a foundation to your energetic emanation of magickal power.

Alchemy and astrology can be a very precise science that includes specific times of the day, hours of planets and so forth. In this short series of posts I will only give you the outline, the basic understanding of where these energies are coming from and what their foundation concerning your magickal ephemeris can be. If you wish to do further studies and have an interest in this area the rest is up to you.

Many Blessings

Full Solar Eclipse on the New Moon- July 2nd 2019

Since the beginning of time humans have been in awe with this celestial phenomenon.

For a Witch such an astrological event is filled with energetic and magical potential. A total eclipse is a powerful “Alchemical Wedding”. It is the sacred union between the Sun- Helios (The solar King) and the Moon-Selene (The Luna Mother).

In such an occurrence, the total eclipse only occurs during the Moons first phase, that is on the day of the New Moon.

The New moon signifies important beginnings and endings, one that conjures energetic growth. At this time it is idea to:

  • Cleanse and purify the home and the self
  • Let go of what is restricting you
  • Make room for the new

This is truly an event that induces metamorphosis to bring forward the new you.

Take the time to go within and be still, clear any doubts and fears that might be holding you back in moving forward.

Set up you altar for the Moon Goddess and the Sun God and honour their union. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Eclipse Blessings to you!

An Introduction to Chinese Astrology

Most of us, especially in the USA, have been to a Chinese restaurant at least once that has placemats showing the twelve signs of their Zodiac. All you have look for is the year you were born. My granddaughter bought me a used book called “The Little Giant Encyclopedia of the Zodiac.” Reading I found out that the date of your birth is just as important to know your Chinese sign as it is to know your tropical zodiac sign.

The Chinese Zodiac is represented by twelve different animals, that repeat in order throughout a 12-year cycle. This is also how the name of the current year of the Chinese Calendar year. The names of the 12 animals are The Rat, The Ox, The Tiger, The Rabbit, The Dragon, The Snake, The Horse, The Goat, The Monkey, The Rooster, The Dog, and The Pig.

Once you know your zodiac sign then it is time to find out if you are a Yin or a Yang person, this is not based on if you are a male or female when doing a Chinese Zodiac reading it is based on what your animal sign is. Next, you can find out the elemental group you belong to. In China, the elements are Metal, Fire, Wood, Earth, and Water.

I will go into more detail about each of the different aspects of how to do a Chinese zodiac reading. The Next Topic will be the Chinese Zodiac Calendar.

Here is a hypothetic, simplified reading for Jane Smith: She was born on October 31, 1954

In 1954 the dates for that year started on Feb 3, 1954, and ended on Jan 23, 1955, making Ms. Smith a Horse which is a Yang person and her element is Fire.

As I said, in the beginning, I will go through each part of a Chinese Zodiac reading in its own post.

The Witches Digest for Wednesday, August 30 – (Part 2 )

Current Moon Phase for August 30th

Waxing Gibbous
Illumination: 61%

The Moon today is in a Waxing Gibbous phase. This phase is when the moon is more than 50% illuminated but not yet a Full Moon. The phase lasts round 7 days with the moon becoming more illuminated each day until the Full Moon. During a Waxing Gibbous the moon will rise in the east in mid-afternoon and will be high in the eastern sky at sunset. The moon is then visible though most of the night sky setting a few hour before sunrise. The word Gibbous first appeared in the 14th century and has it’s roots in the Latin word “gibbosus” meaning humpbacked.
